We live in an environment where technology is all around us. This technology is brought to us over the decades by the teams of different engineers belonging to different engineering disciplines.

In this episode. I will be explaining an introduction to engineering.

Well, Engineering is derived from Latin words Ingenium meaning clear and ingeniare meaning to device or design something

From the definition, it is clear that the engineers are clever creators in literal terms and that is so cool right. So now you might think that engineering is a new scientific term. However, it is not. Engineering existed in ancient times as well. The Great Pyramid of Giza is an extraordinary example of ancient engineering. Not just this the invention of the hourglass, wheels and etc are remarkable engineerings of their time. Let's discuss this history of engineering in some other podcast episode.

Now we all know that engineering is a scientific field, but the question of consideration here is that what kind of knowledge do engineers use through which they create remarkable results. Do they use biological sciences, medical sciences or some martian knowledge. Actually engineers use complex knowledge of physics and mathematics and apply it to get unique and useful ideas to solve complex engineering problems.

Another question of consideration is that how we normal people can find applications of engineering in our daily lives. Do we have to go to someplace special to see the stunning engineerings outcomes? The answer here is no, engineering is all around as said in the beginning of the episode. The pavements we walk on, the automobile that we use to drive, the houses we live in and the modern metropolitan cities are the common engineering examples.

Another scientific point is cleared so far that engineering is a vast scientific field responsible for bringing change in our societies. But this change is not brought by only one engineer or engineering discipline.

In fact, a team of engineers from different engineering disciplines works together day and night to bring that technological change to our society. These disciplines of engineering include civil engineering, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering and etc.

AC-DC Power Supply 1 ( Block Diagram)

  THEORETICAL BLOCK DIAGRAM So the basic purpose of a power supply is to convert and AC signal to DC Signal. The block diagram of the power supply would be something like given below The small electronic circuits cannot handle high voltage current. So a transformer is used to reduce the AC input and will give the required AC voltage value at output Now to convert an AC signal to DC signal A rectifier is used. The output from the rectifier is not a pure DC output. In fact, it contains a lot of ripples and it is highly not smooth. To make the DC output smooth and remove the AC content of the rectifier a filter circuit is used. This filter is either LC (inductor-capacitor) filter, RC (resistive – capacitive) filter. The choice of the filter depends on the designer of the circuit and to the type of power supply. The output now becomes a full DC with constant signal but still it is unregulated voltage. Meaning that a designer is receiving a higher than required voltage. So,
